The City Carried Us
New York's strength was never only its skyline. It was who reached back.
Artist statement
Strength lives in the decision to reach for another person.
The City Carried Us is a World Trade Center memorial centered on absence, service, and collective responsibility rather than destruction. The two Memorial pools form the quiet heart of the composition. Above them, the Tribute in Light becomes a pair of open hands supporting the living skyline.
Around the pools, firefighters, police officers, paramedics, transit workers, nurses, construction workers, teachers, small-business owners, elders, parents, children, and neighbors form an unbroken circle. One golden current passes through their hands and continues into the subway system, bridges, harbor, and borough street grids.
The work does not imply any charitable proceeds or formal affiliation. It asks viewers to remember the moments when New Yorkers carried people they did not know.
Work description
THE CITY CARRIED US is a civic memorial to the people of New York. The World Trade Center Memorial pools remain as two quiet absences, while the Tribute in Light rises into open hands supporting the living skyline. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, transit workers, construction workers, nurses, teachers, small-business owners, elders, parents, children, and neighbors form a circle around the site.
One continuous golden thread connects their hands to the subway, bridges, harbor, and borough street grids. No profession or political identity stands above another. The work remembers a moment when New Yorkers carried strangers and asks what the city might become if that responsibility remained part of daily life.
